Sports Ministry Pledges IDR1.5 Bln Bonus to Motivate Athletes to Win Gold in 2018 Asian Games

The Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs Imam Nahrawi said the pledge of a bonus of IDR1.5 billion becomes the motivation for Indonesian athletes to win gold medals in the 2018 Asian Games.

According to Imam, the Sports Ministry does not aim at improving the ranking or improvement of athlete achievement record. “But, we want all athletes to pursue the achievement of gold medal,” emphasized Sports Minister in Jakarta, Thursday (3/29/2018).

However, Minister Imam said the bonus value in the 18th Asian Games will still get technical review from Deputy III of Sports Ministry especially for the number of games that is followed by more than one athlete.

“Assistant Deputy III for Awards and Promotion is still formulating bonus calculations for athletes winning silver medal, bronze medals, and for the team,” said Minister Imam.

In addition to awarding the athletes, the Sports Ministry will also provide bonuses to coaches and assistant coaches who have delivered athletes winning the medals in the Asian Games to be held in Jakarta and Palembang.

“The bonus amount for the coach is 60 percent of the bonus the athlete receives. We will also calculate the bonus amount for the assistant coach, including the supporting team such as masseur, psychologist, and nutritionist,” said Minister Imam again.

The total budget of Sports Ministry for bonus award for medalists in Asian Games and Asian Para Games is IDR64 billion whose budget post lies in Assistant Deputy III for Awards and Promotion.

“I have reported in a limited meeting at the Palace about the bonus budget in Asian Games and Asian Para Games. The budget will be fulfilled by the Ministry of Finance,” said the Minister of Sports.

Despite having prepared a medal bonus in the Asian Games, Minister Imam has not been able to deliver the targets of medals in Asia’s highest multi-sport party.

“The number of medals will be [announced] in June because at this time the national training athletes are undergoing training camp and following the test championships. We have to measure objectively based on the matches and championships followed by the athletes,” said the Sports Minister concluding.
