Poll Result Not a Benchmark, Says Megawati

Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Chairman Megawati Soekarnoputri said that the recent poll result could not be used as a benchmark for a candidate’s success in the 2018 regional head elections and the 2019 Presidential Election despite PDI-P topping most of the polls.

“Poll results are dynamic. PDI-P maybe top the polls today, but it can drop if any unwanted things happen,” said Megawati in the opening of PDI-P coordination meeting in Central Jakarta on Thursday, May 3.

She further reminded her members to not be overly proud with poll results; “I never taught people to just sit around and wait for the poll results,” she said.

During this opportunity, Megawati explained the result of Kompas poll conducted from March 28 to April 1 stating that PDI-P was at the top of the electability list after obtaining 33.3 percent votes. Meanwhile, the second spot went to Gerindra Party with a 10.9 percent electability level.

“PDI-P can be proud of that but should avoid being overbearing,” said Megawati.

Megawati asked for every PDI-P member to preserve the party’s image and prohibited any member to speak in behalf of the party if it is mainly driven by personal interests.
