Indonesian Rock Climbing Team Aims to Break World Records in 2018 World Cup

Indonesian rock climbing team is aiming for world record breaking at 2018 Climbing World Cup Championship in Moscow, Russia, April 21-23. The championship in Moscow is very important as a provision to reach the target of two gold medals in 2018 Asian Games.

“We are aiming at breaking the world record on behalf of Reza Alipour from Iran at the championship in Nanjing, China in 2017 with a time of 5.48 seconds. Our athletes have achieved 5.33 seconds of record when practicing in Yogyakarta,” said the General Secretary of the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation Central Board (PB FPTI) Sapto Hardiono in a press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday (4/17/2018).

FPTI, said Sapto, sends 16 athletes to the speed race at the Climbing World Cup in Russia. Of all athletes sent, FPTI put great hopes on the three champions.

“We have three leading athletes namely Aris Susanti Rahayu on women individual speed, Aspar and Sabri on men individual,” said Sapto.

Sapto said the athletes still have to form a mental match in the international championship despite having recorded the best time when practicing in the national training camp.

“We are optimistic that our athletes will reach the championship podium in the last two competitions in 2017,” said Sapto, who claimed to win two Asian Games gold medals from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The selection of Russia as a test event to break the world record, according to Sapto, because Russia has superior athletes in the rock climbing branch, especially speed.

“Our toughest competitor for the speed numbers in the Asian Games is the Iranian and Chinese athletes. Meanwhile in the lead and bouldering numbers, the toughest competitors are the Japanese and South Korean athletes,” Sapto said.

In addition to Russia, the 16 athletes of PB FPTI will also follow two other World Cup Rock Climbing series in Chongqing, China, on May 5-7 and in Tai’an, China, on May 11-13.

National rock climbing athlete Aspar said Indonesian athletes have pocketed the best time record during four-month training in Yogyakarta so optimistically break the world record.

“My best time in training is 5.2 seconds, while some of my friends are 5.38 seconds. We hope we are able to demonstrate the skill as we did in training in the championship later,” said Aspar.
