World Bank offers Indonesia Loans for Multiple LRT Projects
The World Bank is reportedly offering the Indonesian government a loan to specifically fund the country’s light rail transit (LRT) developments in four major cities other than Jakarta such as; Medan, Bandung, Surabaya, and Bali.
The offer was announced by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan in a coordination meeting on urban transportation that was held by the Ministry in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 11.
“Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan offered a great idea in the meeting, he said that the World Bank is offering to provide a loan. We will take that opportunity since we know that the transportation management in major cities in Indonesia is not yet maximized,” said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi after the meeting ended.
According to Minister Budi, the Indonesian government will present its proposal on urban transportation managements during the IMF-World Bank annual meeting that is set to be held in Bali on October of this year.
The cities that will be submitted by the government to receive the LRT projects are Medan, Bandung, and Surabaya. “There were also suggestions to include Bali, so there are four cities we will submit,” he said.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya said that the projects will likely utilize a Government and Business Entity Cooperation (KPBU) scheme upon handling the multiple LRT projects.
