Jokowi Receives Indian PM Modi
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
Modi arrived at 10:15 am local time and joined Jokowi to attend the welcome ceremony. The national anthems of the two countries were played, and a 19-cannon salute was given during the ceremony.
After inspecting some personnel, Modi signed the Merdeka Palace’s guest book, and the two leaders then headed for a one-on-one and bilateral meeting.
Some of Jokowi’s cabinet members present at the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security Wiranto; Coordination Minister for Economy Darmin Nasution; Coordinating Minister for People Development and Culture Puan Maharani; and Coordinating Minister for Maritime Luhut Panjaitan.
Also Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi; Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung; Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita; Health Minister Nila Moeloek; Chairman of Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board Thomas Lembong, and Indonesian Ambassador to India Sidartho Suryodipuro.
According to the Presidential Office, the two leaders will witness the signing of some bilateral cooperation agreements between Indonesia and India.
During the bilateral meeting, the two leaders will highlight potential areas of cooperation in marine, economy, and socio-culture as well as discuss regional and global issues.
After a series of meetings at the Merdeka Palace, on Wednesday afternoon, Jokowi and Modi will attend the India-Indonesia Kite Festival at the National Monument Arena, Jakarta.
During the three-day state visit on May 29-31, Modi is scheduled to attend a meeting with members of the Indian diaspora at the Jakarta Convention Center.
He will also attend an Indonesia-India CEO Forum, which is the second event after the first was held during Jokowi’s visit to India in 2016. The forum aims to bring together businesspersons from Indonesia and India to strengthen business-to-business cooperation.
