Jusuf Kalla: Surabaya Bombings Might Beset 2018 Asian Games
Vice President Jusuf Kalla stated the series of bombings in Surabaya and Sidoarjo might beset the establishment of 2018 Asian Games. Jusuf Kalla said foreign tourists might likely be scared to visit Indonesia post the terrorism act.
“Because foreign people are similar to us. For example, when some incidents happened in Pakistan, we tend to afraid to enter Pakistan,” he said in his speech at Atlet Century Park Hotel, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, May 15. “Even if the incident occurred in northern Pakistan,” he added.
The bombings attack occurred on Sunday, May 13 and Monday, May 14, 2018, in two cities of East Java, Surabaya and Sidoarjo. The first attack was on Sunday morning at three different churches namely the Santa Maria Catholic Church, the Indonesian Christian Church (Gereja Kristen Indonesia), and the Pentecostal Church.
Later that evening, a suicide bombing occurred in a low-cost apartment building (Rusunawa) Wonocolo owned by a terrorist family in Sidoarjo. On Monday, May 14, suicide bombers attacked the Surabaya City Police Headquarters (Mapolrestabes).
Jusuf Kalla said foreign tourist might feel scared to come in Indonesia despite the games takes place in Jakarta and Palembang where the venue is far enough from Surabaya and Sidoarjo. “Sometimes those foreign people could not differentiate that matter,” he said.
Furthermore, Vice President Jusuf Kalla called on the public to succeed 2018 Asian Games by preventing terrorism act together with the police. He appealed the community to report anything related to such crimes in respective areas to the police.
