Post Surabaya Bombing, Soekarno Hatta Airport Tightens Security

Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi requested security at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to be increased following the bombing terror in Surabaya.

“Therefore we apologize to the passengers if there are things that are less comfortable because of our treatment. This is all in order to improve the security,” he said during a sudden inspection in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten, Sunday, May 13.

The increased security, Budi said, is the attitude taken by the Ministry of Transportation over a series of recent terror acts. The last is a bomb blast at three churches in Surabaya today that killed 11 people.

Budi said the airport security or aviation security (Avsec) has received assistance in the form of additional police officers who guard at Soekarno Hatta Airport, from 500 personnel to 700 personnel.

The additional members include the Gegana team, Jihandak, as well as the sniffer dog or K-9.

In addition, the airport security team consists of 303 TNI Operations Control Operations (BKO) personnel, 849 Avsec officers, 179 outsourced officers, and 1090 security guards. The addition is also made to the close circuit television surveillance cameras (CCTV) from 1,500 units to 1,800 units.

“I am sure TNI and Polri are the best people of Indonesia and able to keep this airport safe,” he said.

In addition, random vehicle checks will be enforced at each terminal entrance. Budi also asked the security officers to take firm action against people who are considered suspicious.

To that end, Budi has also asked Angkasa Pura 2 to deploy the not-in-uniform officers to monitor the conditions on the ground.

But he has not set a target for how long the increased security to prevent the act of terrorism takes place. According to him, as long as it is needed, the instruction will continue to apply.

“We have not been able to determine, at least in the next 2 weeks it should be done consistently. If we deem it necessary and we ask for information from BIN, it will be continued even if needed during Eid Day also we will do it,” said Budi on anticipation steps after bombing terror in Surabaya.
