Indonesia Holds Parades to Promote Upcoming Asian Games

Indonesia held parades on Sunday in two cities that will co-host the upcoming Asian Games, the world’s second-largest multisport event after the Olympics.

Vice Indonesian President Jusuf Kalla opened the Asian Games Parade in Jakarta, saying the games to be held from Aug 18 to Sept 2, with participation by around 10,000 athletes from 45 countries, “will be the largest event we’ve ever hosted.”

“The 18th Asian Games is six-folds bigger than the fourth Asian Games we hosted in 1962,” he said, referring to the last time the games were held in Indonesia.

The Jakarta parade was participated in by thousands of people from dozens of communities, many of whom wore attractive costumes. It included a marching band, cheerleaders and disabled athletes.

The other parade was held in Palembang, South Sumatra, which will co-host the games.
