Only 600 Climbers Allowed on Semeru

Following the reopening of the Mount Semeru climbing path on April 4, 2018, Ranu Pane Village in Lumajang, East Java, has been flooded with enthusiastic climbers, both locals and foreigners. Ranu Pane is located at the base of Mount Semeru where climbers begin their ascent to the top of the mountain.

The climbing path was closed at beginning of this year due to ecosystem recovery efforts. Authorities of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) re-opened the climbing path through the issuance circular letter number PG.04/T.8/BIDTEK.1/KSA/12/2017.

However, the number of climbers allowed to climb the mountain is limited to 600 climbers per day. In addition, climbers must first register online before they can be allowed to climb.

Budi Mulyanto, the Daily Executive Head of Region 2 TNBTS, said that another restriction currently in place was climbers are not allowed to climb until the peak of Mahameru.

“The safe limit for climbing is Kalimati, so the climbers are strictly forbidden to climb to the top of Semeru [Mahameru],” Budi said.
