Asian Games Tennis Gold Medalist will Receive Wildcard

Gold medal winner of the single men and single women tennis match in the 2018 Asian Games will be awarded with a wildcard to compete in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

“This is a good incentive for Asian tennis players,” said technical delegate for tennis of the Asian Games Shunmugam Uthrapathy quoted from the Indonesian Tennis Association Twitter account on Friday, April 6, 2018.

On a different occasion on Thursday, April 5, 2018, Uthrapathy said that the 2018 Asian Games can be considered as a good opportunity for Indonesian tennis players to win medals because the Asian Games, which will be held on August 2018, happens to share the same schedule with the American Grand Slam Open Tournament 2018, which will begin on August 27, 2018.

“This means, that there is a probability that most of the world’s elite – even mid-level – players will prioritize the US open,” Uthrapathy said.

Uthrapathy explained that Asian Games does not contribute to ranking points in the Women Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Therefore, according to Uthrapathy, it is most likely that Asian elite players will not take part in the Asian Games. However, Uthrapathy added that players who will compete in the Asian Games cannot be taken lightly.

“But because of the time constraints, there are strong indications that prominent players will focus on the US open,” Uthrapathy said.

The Indonesian Tennis Association targeted that the Indonesian team will win at least one medal.
