Indonesian singer Tulus to hold debut concert in Malaysia
Are you ready for an emotional night with Indonesian singer-songwriter Tulus?
The award-winning artist will be holding his debut concert at Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur on Sept. 18. However, additional details about the concert is still under wraps and will be announced at a later date.
“I can’t wait to do the concert. I never thought that one day I’d be able to perform at a prestigious venue like Istana Budaya,” the 29-year-old singer said in an interview in Kuala Lumpur last week.
Tulus was in town to promote his third album Monokrom which features the hit single Pamit. The album picked up four Anugerah Musik Indonesia awards (the country’s equivalent to Grammy) last year. His award wins include Best Album and Best Soul/R&B/Urban singer.
“I can only say that I’m grateful for the way my music career has turned out. When I started out at 24, I didn’t think my songs would be widely received by listeners.
“My intention was just to express how I feel,” said Tulus who is known for his heartfelt lyrics and soaring vocals.
When it comes to songwriting, Tulus said inspiration can come from anywhere and anyone.
“I can be inspired from the stories my friends share. It also depends on my imagination. Sometimes, I think about writing songs that will remind people of a city on a rainy day or a beautiful spring day.”
He added: “I don’t have any formal music education, so this is the only way I know how to write my songs.”
Tulus joked that he doesn’t have to be a hermit to write his songs. “I don’t have any specific time or place (for songwriting). It’s not like I have to be alone or up in the mountains,” he said laughing.
The singer is guarded when he is asked about personal stories behind some of his songs. He rather keep some things private. However, he said that the title track from his latest album is one that is very personal to him as it is a biography of sorts.
“The song Monokrom feels like a representation of my music journey so far. It’s also my way of appreciating friends and family who have supported my career.”
