Former Corruption Convict Registers as Legislative Candidate

The Bangka Belitung General Election Commission (KPU) reportedly received registration files from a member of the region`s legislative council (DPRD) who is also a former convict for a corruption case.

The files are registered under the name Hamzah Suhaimi, former Pangkalpinang Legislative Council member who was convicted for receiving Rp40 million gratifications for a project from the region’s Head of Finance Agency.

“The registration was filed under the name Hamzah, and it is true that it is the Hamzah Suhaimi who registered himself during the last day of registration,” said the Head of Bangka Belitung KPU Davitri yesterday, July 12.

Hamzah initially registered himself for the Bangka Belitung DPD member candidacy without listing his last name.

According to the Indonesian Supreme Court (MA) record, Hamzah Suhaimi was convicted to four years of incarceration after he was charged under Law No. 31/2009 on corruption eradication.

Furthermore, Davitri said that the KPU is currently verifying the requirements of every file submitted to the registration of DPD member candidacy.

“We will adjust it with KPU Law No. 14/2018 Article 60. We will factually determine whether [Hamzah] has fulfilled the necessary requirements or not,” said Davitri. The region’s KPU has barred former convicts from submitting as candidates for legislation.
