Indonesia to Enhance Economic Partnership with Tunisia: Minister

Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita led an Indonesian trade mission to Tunisia to try and enhance the economic partnership between the two countries.

The trade mission organized a business forum to foster trade, investment and an economic partnership between Indonesia and Tunisia. The forum was attended by Tunisian Trade Minister Omar Behi and various businesspeople.

“Amid the uncertainty of the global economy, it is an opportunity for Indonesia to enhance mutual economic cooperation with African countries, particularly Tunisia,” Enggartiasto said in a statement received by The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

He underlined the importance of Asia and Africa in the world economy because the continents represented 38 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP), 76 percent of the world’s population, 44 percent of world exports, 41 percent of world imports and 35 percent of foreign direct investment.

Enggartiasto said Indonesia, the largest country in Southeast Asia, was a good partner for Tunisia to expand their markets into East Asia, while Tunisia was a strategic location and could serve as a gateway for Indonesia to expand trade into East Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

At the business forum, he promoted Indonesian palm oil products and the 33rd Indonesian Trade Expo, which will be held from Oct. 24 to 28.

The minister believed that palm oil had a great market opportunity in Tunisia because it was used in various products, including cosmetics, a household’s daily needs as well as in food and beverages.
