South Sumatra Electoral Debate Advised to Avoid SARA Issues

In the wake of the open debate of the 2018 South Sumatra Gubernatorial Election, the commissioner of the region’s elections supervisory agency (Bawaslu) Iin Irwanto requested each and every candidate to avoid using issue of SARA (ethnicity, religion and race).

“There should not be any symbols that is provocative, radical, or SARA,” said Iin on Thursday, June 21.

He also reminded candidates to use the momentum of the debate to truly introduce their vision and work programs that they have prepared for the future. “Use the debate as a competition ground for ideas between candidates to convince potential voters,” said Iin.

His advice did not stop at the candidates, Iin also reminded the debate’s moderator Tysa Novenny to maintain her neutrality throughout the debate.

The South Sumatra electoral debate will be held at 19:30 Indonesian Western Time (WIB) at the Whyndam Hotel in Palembang. The South Sumatra regional election will be participated by four pair of candidates. The first is Herman Deru-Mawardi Yahya, Saifudin Aswari Rifai-Muhammad Irvans, Ishak Mekki-Yudha Pratomo, and lastly Dodi Reza-Giri Ramanda.
