‘Wiro Sableng’ stays loyal to books with modern touches

Upcoming action film Wiro Sableng is said to stay true to the original story written by the late Bastian Tito with some modern touches.

“[The film’s] roots are the books since the script was adapted from the original works by the late Bastian Tito released between 1967 and 2006,” said producer Sheila “Lala” Timothy during a meet and greet event at JIEXpo Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Saturday. “However, we’ve added some modern touches to the film, especially since it is in a different format. Whether we want to or not, we need to make some adjustments to the story, hence children nowadays can enjoy the film without having to read the books.”

Lala added that that costumes were one of the aspects that were updated.

Although Lala did not reveal the budget of the film, she said it was expensive, especially because Wiro Sableng is a colossal film with 400 crew involved. “I think audiences need to be satisfied. If we cannot give a maximum result, people won’t watch it. So, this huge budget is to fulfill [the demands of] Indonesian viewers,” Lala said.

Lead actor Vino G. Bastian said the film would be different from its predecessors. “We have a different team and quality, it’s more modern and cooler,” said Vino. “This year’s Wiro Sableng, if you read the books, won’t be too far from them.”

Meanwhile rock band /rif vocalist Andy shared his experiences playing Dewa Tuak in the film. “Perhaps I’m still a newbie in this film industry but getting involved in this project has enhanced my knowledge. I’m just happy. There was nothing too difficult because I did it without any burdens,” Andy said, adding that he faced troubles in remembering the dialogue and he had to take martial arts lesson for a month prior to filming.
