RI Clinches Silver in Asian Junior Athletics Championship
Indonesian pole vault junior athlete Idan Fauzan Richsan has won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Junior Athletics Championship in Gifu, Japan on June 7-June 10.
Idan’s securing silver medal was thanks to his 5.15 meters-high jump, which placed him just behind host-nation athlete Syunto Ozaki, who won the gold medal in pole vault with a 5.20 meter jump. Meanwhile, Thailand’s Kasinpob Chomchanad grabbed the bronze medal with a 5.00 meter jump.
Indonesia’s team manager for the 2018 Asian Junior Athletics Championship, Agustinus Ngamel, said Idan initially went for the 5.25 meter target, which exceeded the national record of 5.2 meters, but all his three attempts went awry.
“Idan had actually tried to break the national record, but he eventually got fatigued with his whole body trembling from exhaustion,” said Agustinus in a written statement today. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Dedi Irawan managed to place fifth overall with a 4.90 meter jump.
Indonesian athletic association PB PASI sent eight athletes overall for the athletics championship spread across multiple classes from pole vaults to hurdles.
Idan Fauzan Richsan and Lalu Muhammad Zohri in the 100-meter dash are two of the three Indonesian junior athletes qualified for the World Junior Athletics Championship that will be held in Finland on July 10-July 15. The other qualified athlete that is currently also participating in the Asian Junior Athletics Championship is Halomoan E. Binsar in the 400 meter hurdle.
