NOFX Issue Apology for Las Vegas Shooting Joke
“We won’t blame it on drugs or alcohol or Ambien. That’s too easy. NOFX said it, and we own it.”
NOFX have shared an apology for recently joking about the tragic October 2017 Las Vegas shooting. The remarks were made during their performance in Vegas for the May 2018 Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival. The band’s statement begins, “There’s no place here to backpedal. What NOFX said in Vegas was shameful. We crossed the line of civility.” They continue by apologizing to victims and witnesses of the tragedy and noting that their comments were “off the cuff, but just as hurtful.”
“We won’t blame it on drugs or alcohol or Ambien,” they write. “That’s too easy. NOFX said it, and we own it. We made a tasteless joke. But to be clear, NOFX does not condone violence against ANY group of people, period!” Find NOFX’s statement below.
On May 27, at the Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival, NOFX guitarist Eric Melvin said, “I guess you only get shot in Vegas if you’re in a country band.” Frontman Fat Mike responded, “At least they were country fans and not punk rock fans.” Following their remarks, the group lost their beer sponsorship and were dropped from their own Camp Punk in Drublic festival. On May 31, they shared an initial statement on Facebook: “What we said in Vegas was shitty and insensitive and we are all embarrassed by our remarks.”
