Crowdfunding Campaign to Raise Money for Ari Malibu’s Cancer Treatment
Two journalists have created a crowdsourcing campaign to raise money for the medical bills of guitarist Ari Malibu of folk duo Ari-Reda, who is currently being treated for throat cancer.
Started by veteran music journalists Adib Hidayat and Denny MR, the campaign aims to collect Rp 100 million (US$7,142) in the next month. As of Sunday, only three people have contributed to the effort, donating a total of Rp 901,428.
“Ari Malibu is suffering from stage-3 throat cancer and tuberculosis. He was admitted to a hospital in Bandung [West Java] but was then brought home to Jakarta,” Adib said in a statement on the crowdfunding page kitabisa.com.
Ari was a key player in the country’s pop scene in the 1980s. He founded the folk group Pahama in the mid-1970s, and some 20 years later, the band Last Few Minutes (LFM) with Ridho Hafiedz (now a member of Slank), before disbanding it after one album.
Ari-Reda was his 2015 comeback with singer Reda Gaudiamo, breathing nostalgia into the pop scene with their folk rendition of Joko Damono’s poetry.
