PDI-P supporters protest newspaper over Megawati story
Dozens of supporters of the Indonesian Democratic party of Struggle (PDI-P) in Bogor, West Java, staged a rally in front of the Radar Bogor newspaper office, protesting against its report criticizing the party patron Megawati Soekarnoputri.
The newspaper published a headline story titled “Ongkang-ongkang Kaki Dapat Rp 112 Juta” in its Wednesday edition. The story, the heading of which means earning money for doing nothing, reported that the government paid the former president a monthly allowance of Rp 112 million (US$ 8,067) for her new role in a body promoting the state ideology of Pancasila.
The protestors said Megawati had never accepted the allowance.
“At around 3:30 p.m., dozens of people barged into the office lobby. Ten of them headed to the fourth floor to hold mediation [with the editorial team],” said Andhika, 25, an employee of the newspaper firm as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Police personnel soon arrived at the scene.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo recently signed a decree to give Megawati an allowance for promoting Pancasila that is almost twice his own income as president.
The remuneration is stipulated in a presidential regulation (Perpres) on facilities and remuneration for members of the Agency for the Implementation of State Ideology of Pancasila (BPIP)
