Indonesian shuttlers urged to evaluate Uber Cup failure ahead of Asian Games
The Indonesian youth and sport ministry has ordered the country’s badminton association to undertake self-evaluation after its players failed to meet their target in the Uber Cup tournament in a bid to boost preparation for the Asian Games, a minister said here.
The association has set a target of sailing into the semifinals of the ongoing Uber Cup tournament taking place in Bangkok, but the Indonesian team was defeated by host country’s team before the semifinals 3-2.
“I am adamant about asking the association to conduct self-evaluation on the performance of the Uber Cup team,” Youth and Sports minister Imam Nahrawi said.
Minister Nahrawi said that self-evaluation would be necessary in the country’s bid to improve its athletes capability and skill ahead of the Asian Games this year.
“It is badly needed as we have set gold medal targets in the 2018 Asian Games,” he said.
The Uber Cup tournament started on May 20 and will end on May 27 along with the Thomas Cup tournament.
Badminton is one of the sports that host Indonesia is hanging its gold medal hopes on at the 18th Asian Games, which are to be held in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta and in Palembang, the provincial capital of South Sumatra province from August 18 to September 2.
