Danny Boyle to Direct New James Bond Film

James Bond will return under the command of a new director.

Eon Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios announced on Friday that Danny Boyle, who won the best director Oscar in 2009 for “Slumdog Millionaire,” will direct the series’s latest installment — its 25th or so, depending how you’re counting. Daniel Craig, as previously announced, will reprise his role as the suave and increasingly surly British spy.

“We are delighted to announce that the exceptionally talented Danny Boyle will be directing Daniel Craig in his fifth outing as James Bond,” Eon’s Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement.

Mr. Boyle will direct a screenplay written by a longtime collaborator, John Hodge, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 1997 for his screenplay for “Trainspotting.” That film, an adaptation of the Irvine Welsh novel of the same name, was also directed by Mr. Boyle.

Last year, it was announced that Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who collaborated on the screenplays for the last six Bond films, would be returning to write the new script. Those plans have apparently changed.

The new film will also be the first Bond movie since 2008’s “Quantum of Solace” not to be directed by Sam Mendes, who helmed the last two installments, “Spectre” and “Skyfall.”

Filming is set to start in December. The movie will be released first in Britain on Oct. 25, 2019, with a North American release to follow on Nov. 8, 2019.

MGM will partner with Annapurna Pictures on U.S. distribution, while Universal Pictures will handle international distribution.

Plot details and a title for the new installment have yet to be announced.
