Govt Urged to be Aware of Counterfeit Money Ahead of Ramadan
The House of Representatives (DPR) Commission XI member Heri Gunawan reminded the government and related parties monitor the circulation of counterfeit money which likely to increase ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
“Based on last year’s cases, the circulation of counterfeit money increased in the certain period, including Ramadan and Eid (Lebaran),” said Heri on Thursday, May 10.
According to the Gerindra politician, the fasting month and Lebaran this year coincide with 2018 Regional election and Presidential Election next year. The regional election is held simultaneously in 17 provinces, 39 cities, and 115 districts.
The government, Heri said, should not refer to the last year’s data where the rate of counterfeit money circulation decreased. “Because, despite the decline, its syndicate still massively present among the society,” he added, assuming that the criminal has now used advanced technology to not only create counterfeit rupiah but also foreign currency.
Earlier, Bank Indonesia Surakarta Deputy Head of Regional Economy Advisory and Development Division Taufik Amrozy said BI along with the police attempted to monitor an increasing circulation of counterfeit money prior to 2018 Regional Election in Central Java.
“The counterfeit money should be monitored; besides the election, the circulation is also affected by the upcoming Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr,” said Taufik in Solo, April 27.
