ANZAC Day Commemorated in Bali

The Australian Consulate General in Bali, along with representatives from the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, held a small dawn service at the former’s office in Bali on Wednesday to commemorate Anzac Day.

Around 200 Australian and New Zealand citizens living in Bali attended the event to honor the servicemen and women who served their nation in times of war, conflicts and in peacekeeping operations.

“As we pause to honor the past and the Anzac spirit, we also recognize today’s veterans, the young men and women who have returned from places like Afghanistan and Iraq. We honor their sacrifice through our remembrance” said Australian Consul General Helena Studdert.

The Anzac tradition was established on April 25, 1915, when thousands of young Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops landed on the shores of Gallipoli in Turkey at dawn to begin a hard-fought campaign that lasted eight months. The anniversary of the landing is observed by Australians and New Zealanders around the world.

“The Anzac spirit lives in the hearts and minds of all Australians as we acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who contributed so much in shaping the identity of our proud nation,” Studdert said.

Counselor Barbara Welton of the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, representatives of the Australian Defense Force, crew members from HMAS Broome and Bali administration officials attended the Anzac Day ceremony.

Officials from the Udayana Military Command, Ngurah Rai Air Force Base, Banyuwangi naval post, Bali Police and Badung Police were also present.
