Ex-Thai PMs Yingluck, Thaksin Now in Japan
Former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her older brother Thaksin, who also served as prime minister, are currently in Japan. Both have been convicted of crimes in Thailand.
A spokesperson for the interim Thai government revealed this to NHK.
Yingluck and Thaksin attended a meeting in Tokyo on Thursday. Sources say they allowed other participants to take photos of them.
The spokesperson says the Thai government believes the Japanese government will not allow the former prime ministers to carry out political activities that could affect bilateral diplomatic ties.
Last month, Thailand’s deputy prime minister said the siblings stayed in Japan in February.
The interim government has been collecting information about them after photos of Yingluck in London and Hong Kong appeared on social media.
Yingluck fled Thailand before the Supreme Court sentenced her to 5 years in prison for negligence in causing huge losses to the government while in office.
Thaksin has been living in exile since a coup ousted him from office in 2006. He was later sentenced in absentia to 2 years in prison for corruption.
