‘Pengabdi Setan’ Opens at No. 1 in Hong Kong
Indonesian horror film Pengabdi Setan (Satan’s Slave) opened in the top slot at Hong Kong cinemas, its director Joko Anwar shared Tuesday on Twitter.
In Tuesday’s tweet, Joko shared an image of the film’s digital advertisement in Hong Kong, which touted Pengabdi Setan as “HK Opening Day and Weekend Box Office No. 1”.
“Pengabdi Setan is currently in number 1 box office in Hong Kong,” Joko wrote in his tweet.
The Hong Kong ad also noted that Pengabdi Setan was the top Indonesian horror film of all time.
Released in 2017, Joko’s film is a remake of the 1980 film directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra.

The film was a hit in Indonesia, where it reportedly attracted 4.2 million viewers and garnered several awards, including Best Cinematography at the 37th Indonesian Film Festival last year.
Pengabdi Setan was also screened in Malaysia and Singapore, and is planned to be screened in other countries including Australia, the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, New Zealand and Switzerland.
