Dilan 1990 Stage Play to be Held in Bandung, Face Many Obstacles

The musical drama of Dilan 1990 will be staged this year in Bandung (May) and Jakarta (October). The process has been running for a year since the idea emerged in 2017.

Along the way, the production team faces many problems such as the funding and place. The musical drama’s producer Ratu Sastrawirya said they keep striving despite having less production fund. In November 2017, they were forced to stop the preparations.

“Until last year’s end, we could not provide meals for the players during the training,” she said in Bandung, Friday, March 23. Then the practice continues when they had the funds.

According to Ratu, they were difficult to gain donators because the musical drama is still not familiar in the society. Most people considered it as cabaret or operetta.

Another crucial obstacle was related to the place. For a long time, the artists and event organizers have complained about the difficulty of getting a decent showhouse. Bandung does not have such a place to stage a musical drama.

Initially, they planned to perform in the closed theater at Taman Budaya Jawa Barat. However, the intention was canceled due to the management wanted to repair the building on the scheduled date, May 11-13, 2018. One alternative choice was Sasana Budaya Ganesha ITB which then canceled due to the acoustic condition and the seating capacity.

Thus, the place has set at Sabilulungan Cultural Building in Soreang, Bandung regency. “Such grand building is rarely used,” said Ratu.

Producer and director of musical drama Dilan 1990 Iyoq Kusdini said the building is convenient but dozens of 800 seats need to be removed. “On that balcony, there is a section blocked by pillars,” he said.
