Jakarta to Follow Court’s Ruling on Water Privatization, Anies Says

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has said he is committed to respecting the Supreme Court’s ruling that ordered a stop to the privatization of pipe water supply in the city.

“[The Supreme Court’s] ruling should be respected. We have to follow it. Is it possible to oppose it?” Anies told journalists at City Hall on Wednesday.

Anies was responding to a plan to restructure city-owned water operator (PDAM) with two private-run companies PT Pam Lyonnaise Jaya (Palyja) and PT Aetra Air Jakarta (Aetra).

“I don’t want City Hall to be the place of the signing but we don’t understand what it contains,” Anies said, adding that he only learned about the new plans for the agreement on Wednesday afternoon.

The Supreme Court ordered the Jakarta administration to terminate its water privatization policy in Jakarta, as it contravened Jakarta’s Bylaw No. 13/1992 on city-owned water company PAM Jaya.

The verdict states that privatization has not improved the service of water supply in term of quality, quantity and continuity.

The verdict ordered the administration to terminate the contract with private companies Palyja and Aetra.

Meanwhile, PAM Jaya has insisted that it will continue to cooperate with the two private companies.
