Vikander Gives Fresh Spin on ‘Tomb Raider’ 2018
Tomb Raider is the contemporary adaption of its namesake and highly popular video game. Helmed by Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, the 2018 iteration is an origins story of the legendary Lara Croft.
Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) may look like just another young woman at a glance; working as a bicycle courier in London and is quick on her feet, whether running or cycling. However, deep down, Lara is feeling lost after the mysterious disappearance of her father, Lord Richard Croft (Dominic West). Lara isn’t convinced that her father is dead.
One day, Lara finds a clue in the last place her father visited. It also shows her a different side to her father: an eccentric adventurer. Together with sea captain Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), Croft goes on a search for her father to the dangerous Japanese island of Yamatai. The pair have no idea what dangers await them.
According to the South China Morning Post, the film returns to Lara’s roots, taking its cue from the game’s tenth title, released in 2013. From start to finish, the audience is transported into the thrilling world of Tomb Raider, where the action never stops.
For some fans, Tomb Raider is closely associated with renowned actress Angelina Jolie, who first brought Lara to life in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider ( 2001 ), followed by Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life ( 2003 ). However, Vikander skillfully makes her own mark as Lara Croft in the latest version.
The audience will be given a glimpse into Lara’s vulnerability beneath her tough exterior on her first adventure and out of her urban comfort zone. With her thespian knack, Vikander gives a fresh spin on both the film and the much beloved heroine.
The film also stars Walton Goggins and Kristin Scott Thomas.
