‘Kartini’ film to be screened at UN Headquarters

Director Hanung Bramantyo’s 2017 biopic Kartini, starring Dian Sastrowardoyo as the national heroine of women’s emancipation, will be screened on March 21 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Kompas reported that the director has posted on Instagram a picture of the formal invitation from the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations. The invitation states that the film will be screened during the 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on March 12-23 at UN Headquarters.

The CSW session will focus on the “challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and empowering rural women and girls”, themes that form the central storyline in Kartini as it depicts the history of women’s struggle for equality and empowerment in Indonesia.

Hanung said he never imagined the film would be screened at the United Nations. In the caption of his Instagram post, he joked that he had no idea what language he should use at the event. The Kartini biopic is a multilingual film that primarily uses Javanese, Kartini’s native tongue.

He also called out to the film’s producers, saying, “Thank you for allowing me to make an honest film,” and mentioned actors of the ensemble cast, such as Dian Sastrowardoyo, Adinia Wirasti, Acha Septriasa, Ayushita and Reza Rahadian.

Hanung also thanked the women in his family, and dedicated a special thank you to the powerful women of Indonesia.
