Indonesia, Jordan Agree to Step up Defense Cooperation

The governments of Indonesia and Jordan have agreed to step up bilateral cooperation in the defense field.

The relations in the defense sector will be stepped up by the ministries of defense of the two countries.

The agreement between the two countries was reached in a meeting between Indonesian Defense Minister, Ryamizard Ryacudu, and Jordanian Defense concurrently Prime Minister, Hani Al Mulki, during the Special Operation Force Exhibition and Conference (Sovex) Jordan Exhibition 2018 on Tuesday.

Ryacudu stated that the cooperation was aimed at facilitating exchange of experiences and expertise between the two countries and provide lessons on weaponry systems, which are suitable for dealing with terrorism.

“This is very important because Indonesia is currently facing the threat of third-generation terrorism,” the defense minister noted.

The first generation is the former Chief of Staff of the Army (KSAD) of Al-Qaeda, the second is the ISIS declaration in the era of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and the third is the return of ISIS fighters from the Middle East to the region.

“This is because the ISIS fighters from the Middle East will form an East Asian division consisting of ISIS Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia,” Ryacudu noted.

Under these conditions, the defense minister believes that this cooperation will have a good impact on Indonesia as it will further strengthen Indonesia`s defense in the face of terrorist attacks.

“In addition, it will strengthen the mindset of Indonesian society to be strong in facing radicalism and the cooperation among countries in the region,” he revealed.

Meanwhile, Al Mulki appreciated the meeting with Ryacudu.

According to him, the cooperation is right to anticipate and counter the potential of terrorism and extremism, which is now beginning to develop in Europe and East Asia.
