Consul General in Sydney Expects Indonesians to Become Batik Ambassadors

Indonesia`s Consul General in Sydney to the states of New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia Heru Hartanto Subolo expects Indonesians in Australia to become batik ambassadors.

The consul general voiced his view during the Promotion of Indonesia Fashion and Batik organized by the Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney recently, according to a statement from the consulate general received here on Thursday.

“Your presence at this event not only reflects your love for Indonesian arts and cultures but is also a reflection of your appreciation for the development of Indonesia’s creative industry,” the consul general emphasized.

The promotional event showcased the best works of batik designer Riana Kesuma from Solo, Central Java Province.

On the sidelines of the fashion show, Kesuma also offered the guests insights into ways to wear the cloth and mix and match batik fabric with modern fashion.

Kesuma was in Canberra and Sydney to promote Indonesian Fashion and Batik as part of the commemoration of Kartini Day that falls on April 2, 2018. Kartini is a prominent Indonesian national figure from Java. She was also a pioneer of education for Indonesian girls and women.

“Creative economy has become one of the important areas for cooperation between Indonesia and Australia,” Consul General Subolo pointed out.

According to Subolo, 25 young Indonesian designers were in Australia to participate in a short course in fashion and textiles.

To promote cooperation in the creative industry between Indonesia and Australia, especially in fashion, the consulate general has twice organized Indonesia Beautiful, a promotional event to promote collaboration between both nations` fashion industry.

The Consulate General in Sydney will hold the third Indonesia Beautiful in October 2018.

“This form of promotion holds importance in strengthening cooperation between Indonesia and Australia in the fashion sector as well as in increasing the presence and visibility of Indonesia in Australia. Hence, I invite you all to become ambassadors of Indonesian fashion and batik in Australia,” Consul General Subolo stated.

Indonesian Batik is officially recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It was included in the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Committee on the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Abu Dhabi on October 2, 2009.

UNESCO recognizes that Indonesian Batik has techniques and cultural symbols that are the identity of Indonesians. Batik has been used during several activities, such as during birth and marriage ceremonies as well as funeral rituals.
